The Minister of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, has said that a gentlemen can't join Awami League, rather, the worst elements of the society are involved with the party.
He made these remarks on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at an event held while inaugurating a weaving training center and basic center at Mirpur of Sirajganj.
In his speech, the minister strongly criticized the Awami League, saying, "We are polite, we know how to be polite. But what have they done? They staged demonstrations and ranted in front of my house. This is the difference between them and us. The Awami League has not just harmed the country in the last 17 years, but has been doing so since its inception."
He said in the elections held after the fall of the Awami League, no one was threatened, no one was prevented from going to polling stations, and there was no incident of stamping day-time voting in the night and then counting them. This government was formed through fair elections.
"What I got from politics is not the main issue. Politics is about what I gave to the people, that is what matters," the minister added.
Highlighting the importance of the weaving industry, the minister said, "Women can become self-reliant through training. There is an opportunity to start from small ventures and become big entrepreneurs in this sector."
"At one time, Pakistan's economy thrived in weaving. After independence, the Awami League destroyed this industry," he added.
Regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the minister said, "He loves the country and wants to keep everyone united. He does not believe in a politics of revenge. It is the teaching of the Zia family to move forward by taking everyone along."
At the beginning of the event, the minister inaugurated the weaving training center.
The event was presided over by Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, and State Minister for Textiles and Jute, Md. Shariful Alam, delivered a special guest speech.
Present on the occasion were the district BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bacchu, Deputy Commissioner Aminul Islam, Police Superintendent Saiful Islam Santu, along with senior officials of the administration.
