Just like any other day, a 79-year-old Russian man had set out alone with the intention of fishing. However, he probably never imagined that this ordinary trip would turn into an ultimate struggle between life and death.
Having lost his way, he became trapped in the dense and rugged mountainous forest surrounding the village of Pilvo on Russia's Sakhalin Island. After surviving amidst the harsh wilderness for nine consecutive days, he was finally rescued.
Following his disappearance, local authorities launched a search and rescue operation once the elderly man's abandoned car was located in Pilvo village. Although the name of the missing individual has not been disclosed, he is known to be a retired official.
According to Russian media reports, the rescue operation was initiated by a joint effort involving the Ministry of Emergency Situations (Polyavka branch), the Ministry of Internal Affairs, representatives from the fishery protection team, and the relatives of the missing man.
Finally, on July 15 (Wednesday), nine long days after his disappearance, local volunteers found him on the banks of the Pilovka River. He was making his final efforts to survive inside the forest, just one kilometer away from his abandoned car.
He had grown exhausted while attempting to clear his way through the dense jungle to find a path back home. Later, the rescue team navigated the difficult terrain to bring the elderly man to a safe location. He is currently recovering under the supervision of physicians.
In a similar survival story in 2024, a 46-year-old Russian citizen named Mikhail Pichugin was rescued alive after drifting for 67 days in a small boat on the freezing waters of the Sea of Okhotsk.
