Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said China will continue supporting the repatriation of Rohingya refugees. He said a new political reality has emerged in Myanmar. In this situation, China will continue to play a mediating role in advancing dialogue between Bangladesh and Myanmar and in seeking a sustainable solution. Work is also progressing on the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
The ambassador made the remarks as a special guest at a seminar organized by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Saturday, July 18.
The Chinese ambassador said Bangladesh-China relations are currently at one of the best stages in their history. He said recent high-level visits have further strengthened the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Yao Wen also highlighted China's full support for implementing the Teesta Mega Project, expanding access for Bangladeshi products to the Chinese market, the potential for high-speed bullet trains, and active mediation in resolving the Rohingya crisis.
He said China remains committed to providing Bangladesh with long-term cooperation in key areas such as development, trade, connectivity, and regional stability.
Assuring full support for the Teesta Mega Project, Yao Wen said, “China is sincerely working toward the implementation of the Teesta River Mega Project. The feasibility study is progressing rapidly, and Beijing is ready to provide the necessary technical and financial assistance. Once implemented, the project will bring positive changes to water management, agriculture, and the environment in the northern region.”
Announcing that China's vast market is opening to Bangladeshi jackfruit exports, the ambassador said, “During the prime minister's recent visit to China, an important protocol was signed on the export of fresh Bangladeshi jackfruit. Following mangoes, the country's national fruit, jackfruit, will now have the opportunity to enter China's vast consumer market, opening a new horizon for the agricultural economy.”
On the potential for bullet trains and cooperation in the transportation sector, the Chinese ambassador said, “Work is progressing on the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCMEC). At the same time, the possibility of introducing China's high-speed rail technology in Bangladesh is being seriously considered. In the future, there may be opportunities to introduce high-speed trains on key routes, including Dhaka-Chattogram.”
