A 40-year-old man was killed after the wall of an earthen house collapsed on him during heavy rainfall in Ukhiya Upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Md. Manik, was trapped under the collapsed wall at around 3:00 pm in the Jambagan area of Haldiapalang Union. He was rescued by locals and taken to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead at about 5:00 pm.
Local resident Rashedul Islam said Manik was having lunch at the house of a man named Ekhlas when a mud wall, weakened by days of continuous rain, suddenly collapsed and buried him beneath the debris.
Hearing the collapse, nearby residents rushed to the scene, pulled him from the rubble, and took him to the hospital.
Rashedul said several days of relentless rainfall have left earthen houses across the upazila in a fragile condition. Families living in mud houses, particularly in low-lying and hill-adjacent areas, are facing a high risk of similar incidents.
Confirming the incident, SM Imrul Qayes Chowdhury, chairman of Haldiapalang Union Parishad, said the earthen wall had become unstable due to continuous rainfall.
“The wall had weakened after several days of heavy rain, leading to this tragic accident. The Union Parishad will provide necessary assistance to the victim’s family,” he said.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mujibur Rahman said an unnatural death (UD) case will be filed over the incident.
Earlier, 11 people, including women and children, were killed in five separate landslides in the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar Sadar, and Pekua within an 18-hour period amid continuous heavy rainfall.
