Law Minister says no legal violation in foreign affairs state minister’s swearing in ceremony

Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has claimed that Foreign Affairs State Minister 1 Humayun Kabir took his oath in accordance with the Constitution and that there was no violation of the law.

The law minister made the claim during a briefing on legal assistance and social protection for children and vulnerable groups at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.

Asked by a journalist whether the foreign affairs state minister had renounced his dual citizenship, the law minister said, “Yes, Humayun Kabir took the oath after renouncing his dual citizenship. Everything we have done has been in accordance with the Constitution.”

Humayun Kabir took oath as the state minister for foreign affairs on Friday, August 21. Before that, he served as the prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser with the rank of state minister.

Although Humayun Kabir was born in Sylhet, he lived in the United Kingdom for many years. He grew up there and received his higher education there. He was active in politics with the UK Labour Party. At one point, Humayun Kabir also became a British citizen.

Questions arose after Humayun Kabir took oath as foreign affairs state minister about whether he had renounced his foreign citizenship.

On Monday, Humayun Kabir was directly asked whether he had renounced his British citizenship.

The foreign affairs state minister did not answer the question. Instead, he asked journalists, “Who reported this news? Who is so bothered by it?”

State Minister Humayun Kabir also said, “I am Bangladeshi. Here, I am... Bangladeshi. I do not think there is anyone who would question my Bangladeshi citizenship or my position. I mean, coming here and working for Bangladesh is not something that any opportunistic person would do.”
