Four people were detained after allegedly entering Bangladesh illegally from India through the Bontara-Gilabari border area in Dinajpur Sadar.
The individuals were apprehended by local residents around 6 am Wednesday and later handed over to members of the Ansar and Village Defense Party (VDP).
After being informed of the incident, personnel from the 29 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion arrived at the scene and took the detainees into custody. They are currently being held at the Shankarpur Union Parishad office.
Lt. Col. Arifuzzaman, commanding officer of the 29 BGB Battalion, said the group consists of three men and one woman.
He said legal proceedings related to the incident are underway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the detainees are residents of Narail district and had crossed the border illegally to enter Bangladesh.
According to BGB officials, it is believed that the group had previously entered India through the Benapole border. They were later detained by local residents while attempting to return to Bangladesh illegally through the Bontara-Gilabari border area.
