Two trains, the Sonar Bangla Express, originating from Chattogram, and the Chandpur-bound Meghna Express, have got problems and stuck at Nangalkot of Cumilla district.
The incidents occurred on Wednesday evening at Tejer Bazar Ukuti and Moghra in Dhalua Union. Because of this, train movement between Chattogram and the rest of the country was halted for approximately two hours.
It has been known that the Dhaka-bound 787 Sonar Bangla Express experienced an engine malfunction upon reaching the Moghra area. This left the passengers on board in a difficult situation. With no road access in the vicinity, the passengers were panicked.
Earlier, the Chandpur-bound 729 Meghna Express derailed its rear coach upon reaching the Tejer Bazar Ukuti vicinity. The train left the rear bogie at the site and proceeded towards Chandpur.
Many passengers, including Alamgir and Jihad, who were on the train, said they were traveling to Dhaka on an express train. They were frightened after getting stranded in a remote area. They added that the road communication is poor and, although train travel is generally comfortable in the country, it is currently becoming frustrating.
Noorur Rahman, Assistant Master of Hasanpur Station, said the engine of one train and a guard coach of another had derailed at separate locations. Therefore, train movement has been temporarily halted. However, work is underway to resolve the issues quickly.
Abu Rayhan, the Upazila Executive Officer, said he is heading to the spot after contacting the station master immediately.
