Former President Ziaur Rahman’s killer, retired Major Mozzaffar Hossain, has been detained by the Detective Branch (DB) 45 years after the assassination.
The detained former army officer has been handed over to the Bangladesh Army.
Despite being fully aware of the grave risks, Ziaur Rahman traveled to Chattogram on May 29, 1981, to resolve a conflict among local military officers stationed there. He stayed at the Circuit House.
He was later killed in a failed military coup at the Circuit House late on the night of May 30. He was buried in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
One of the largest public gatherings in Bangladesh’s history took place during President Zia’s funeral prayer on Manik Mia Avenue, located south of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Approximately 2 million people gathered there.
