Explosive Remarks by Osman Hadi’s Brother Raise New Questions

Omar bin Hadi, the elder brother of slain Sharif Osman bin Hadi, has once again come into the spotlight following two consecutive Facebook posts that have triggered widespread debate. In the posts, he put some observation on the alleged 'roles of figures linked to the interim government, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Jamaat leaders', prompting mixed reactions on social media. The issue has also gained renewed attention in light of a recent statement by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In a Facebook post made late Tuesday night, Omar Hadi claimed that “several advisers of the interim government and some MPs and ministers of the BNP government were directly involved in the killing of Shaheed Osman Hadi.” In a subsequent post, he alleged that “a personal secretary of the Ameer of Jamaat was involved in creating the background to Osman Hadi’s killing” and that there had been intense pressure on their family to remove Hadi from the Dhaka-8 constituency.

These back-to-back posts sparked intense discussion online. Many users and observers have called for the publication of concrete evidence to support such serious allegations, while others believe the matter warrants further investigation. At the same time, questions are being raised about the timing and political significance of these posts in the current context.

Multiple organizers of Inqilab Mancha and family members have confirmed that the Facebook account from which the posts were made belongs to Omar Hadi. Previously, controversial comments were also posted from the same account, including a statement suggesting, “If necessary, take Hadi’s wife, just give me the child.” Omar bin Hadi was appointed in January by the interim government on a contractual basis as Second Secretary at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where he is currently stationed.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an organizer of Inqilab Mancha told Agamir Somoy that the killing of Osman Hadi and related issues have long been surrounded by controversy, and that Omar Hadi’s recent posts have further fueled those debates.

Another organizer alleged that Omar bin Hadi had used Osman Hadi for personal interests, arguing that his own interests appeared to outweigh his demand for justice for his brother’s killing. According to this view, after securing personal gains, Omar is now making disparaging remarks about Osman Hadi.

Meanwhile, a statement made on Monday by Mamata Banerjee went viral on social media. At a political program, she said, “I know who was used to carry out the murder. If I say it, Bangladesh will erupt.” She also claimed that in a high-profile killing linked to Bangladesh, West Bengal Police’s STF had arrested several individuals, and that a request had come from India’s Union Home Ministry not to disclose the matter publicly.

Although social media users have been speculating about a possible connection between Mamata Banerjee’s remarks and the killing of Osman Hadi, she did not directly name any individual in her statement.
