The BNP-led government has initiated plans to construct the long-awaited Second Padma Bridge between Daulatdia in Rajbari and Paturia in Manikganj.
To support the project, Tk 45 million has been allocated in the 2026-27 fiscal year budget for a feasibility study.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury disclosed the information in Parliament while responding to a question from opposition lawmaker Nurunnisa Siddika, a member of a reserved women's seat.
Siddika asked whether any funds had been allocated in the proposed budget or Annual Development Program (ADP) for the construction of the Paturia-Daulatdia Second Padma Bridge.
In response, the finance minister said the project is one of the key commitments outlined in the government's election manifesto.
"The process of appointing a consulting firm to conduct a feasibility study is currently underway under the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, which operates under the Bridges Division," he said.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury also said the project has been recommended for inclusion in the list of unapproved new projects, known as the 'Green Page,' in the 2026-27 ADP.
He noted that no specific allocation has yet been made for the bridge's construction. However, Tk 45 million has been earmarked from the Bangladesh Bridge Authority's own budget to carry out the feasibility study.
According to the minister, the study will assess the project's viability, estimated cost and other technical aspects.
"Future decisions regarding implementation of the project will be made based on the findings of the feasibility study and related evaluations," he added.
