The government has decided to deploy the army in six districts across the country to prevent potential sabotage ahead of the anniversary of the Awami League (AL) on 23 June, a party whose activities are prohibited.
Sources at the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the matter. The deployment will cover Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Faridpur, Gopalganj, and Chattogram.
An official notification regarding the deployment is expected to be issued on Monday.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) implemented extensive security measures to maintain law and order and ensure public safety in Dhaka. Authorities have planned to cover all of Dhaka under security to avoid any unpleasant incidents and maintain urban security during the programs.
A DMP press release said that police will conduct special pickets and checkpoint duties at more than 200 strategic locations throughout Dhaka. To ensure security, strict checkpoints and search operations will be intensified at all city entry points to prevent outsiders or suspects from creating chaos.
The press release added that specialized units of the DMP will remain active in the field alongside regular police to ensure tight security.
Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) units will be deployed around the clock. Moreover, the Special Branch (SB) and the Internal Affairs Division (IAD) will conduct extensive intelligence operations in plainclothes to foil any planned sabotage or conspiracies.
