Iran has announced the indefinite closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global maritime channnel. The announcement was made in an emergency statement issued by the naval branch of the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to reports by Middle East Eye, the move significantly elevates existing geopolitical tensions in the region.
In its official statement, the IRGC explicitly noted that the Strait of Hormuz will remain entirely closed until further notice and until the United States completely ceases its military interference in the region. The military group issued a stern warning that any foreign intervention or attempts to navigate the area using unauthorized maritime routes would be met with a severe response.
The IRGC disclosed that several international vessels had already defied orders to return to designated maritime paths following the closure. According to the statement, one particular ship disabled its tracking and positioning systems, creating an acute maritime security risk. Iranian naval forces subsequently fired warning shots to force the vessel to a halt.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps concluded its message with a strict warning that any future violations, unauthorized entries, or non-compliance with the new regulations within these territorial waters would face an even harsher and more decisive response.
Given that a significant portion of the world's petroleum supply passes through the narrow Strait of Hormuz, Iran's unprecedented decision is expected to trigger major disruptions in global energy markets and international trade networks. (Source Middle East Eye)
