Trump claims Denmark deal gives permanent control of Greenland

US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday that Washington had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give the United States “permanent control over security and all other needs” on the Arctic island.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, “At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the US will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland.”
He added that US adversaries would be prohibited from establishing military bases or deploying personnel in Greenland without written authorization from the United States. The work would begin immediately to establish a significant US military presence in suitable locations across Greenland, noting that numerous potential sites were available.
Meanwhile, Denmark and Greenland issued a joint statement Friday indicating that they would sign an agreement with the United States during next week’s United Nations General Assembly session.
The statement said the proposed agreement would require parliamentary approval in both Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, and Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement “recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.”
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement with the United States “strengthens” the territory’s security.
