Luka Modric celebrated a historic 200th international cap with a victory as Croatia defeated Panama 1-0 at Toronto Stadium.
The result successfully launches Croatia’s FIFA World Cup 202 campaign while simultaneously ending Panama’s hopes of advancing, confirming the elimination of Los Canaleros with one group match remaining.
Panama controlled the tempo throughout the first half and nearly seized the lead in the 23rd minute.
Jose Luis Rodriguez connected with a powerful header that seemed destined for the net, but Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic executed a spectacular save to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
Croatia established a firmer grip on the match following the halftime interval. The breakthrough arrived in the 54th minute when Josip Stanisic whipped a precise low cross into the box from the right flank.
Substitute Ante Budimir reacted quickly at the back post, tucking the ball home to give his side the advantage.
The lead nearly doubled just three minutes later. Marco Pasalic found himself with a golden opportunity, but Panama’s goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera blocked his initial strike. Pasalic then sent the subsequent rebound over the target.
Panama continued to press for an equalizer, yet they could not beat an inspired Livakovic, who maintained a clean sheet to deny the Central American side their first-ever World Cup point.
The final whistle sparked celebrations for Croatia and their legendary captain, Modric, as they secured three points on the world stage.
