Argentina has produced legendary footballers such as Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona. Now, young winger Stephen Kiki Ramos has emerged in the spotlight for a different reason.

The talented Velez Sarsfield prospect is the first player born in Haiti to receive a call up to any Argentina national team.

Ramos was born on April 3, 2009, in Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. After the devastating earthquake in 2010, he was adopted by an Argentine family at just eight months old, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Having grown up in Argentina, Ramos has fully embraced the country’s culture. He also speaks Spanish with the natural Buenos Aires accent. In a recent interview, many fans on social media jokingly wrote after hearing him speak, “He is as Argentine as dulce de leche and mate.”

Ramos joined the Velez Sarsfield academy as a child through a neighbor. His outstanding pace, physical strength, and ability to beat defenders in one on one situations quickly drew attention.

Primarily a winger, Ramos has drawn comparisons with Vinicius Junior because of his direct attacking style.

Although an injury in 2025 briefly slowed his development, he made an impressive comeback. After an outstanding season with Velez’s youth team, he scored 12 goals in the Argentine Football Association youth competition. As a reward for that performance, Argentina Under 17 head coach Diego Placente called him up to the Argentine Football Association training camp in Ezeiza in 2026. With that call up, Ramos made history. He became the first footballer born in Haiti to earn the opportunity to represent any Argentina national team.

The excitement surrounding Ramos is not only because of his football talent but also because of his unique life story. If he earns a place in Argentina’s senior national team in the future, he will join the short list of players of African descent to wear the Albiceleste jersey.

Some Black footballers who have previously represented Argentina include Alejandro de los Santos, former captain Jose Ramos Delgado, and Hector Baley, the goalkeeper from Argentina’s 1978 World Cup winning team. In more recent times, Clemente Rodriguez, Cristian Medina, and Ayrton Costa have also represented the diversity of Argentina’s football community.

However, Ramos still faces major challenges. He must first establish himself in Velez’s senior team. After that, he will have to decide which country he will represent at the international level.

Under FIFA eligibility rules, because he was born in Haiti, he will be eligible to represent either Argentina or Haiti in the future if he chooses.
