Bangladesh has once again embarked on a path toward democracy following the bloody mass uprising of students and citizens in 2024, which came after a prolonged one and a half decade struggle against fascism, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said.
He made the remarks on Thursday while presenting the national budget.
“Following this journey, on February 12, 2026, a free, fair, and peaceful national election led to the formation of a government under the leadership of the BNP with a two-thirds majority,” Amir Khasru stated.
At the beginning of his speech, the finance minister paid deep tribute to the heroic martyrs of the Liberation War and the women and others who made sacrifices during that time. He also remembered all those who sacrificed their lives in the long struggle for democracy since independence, as well as those injured by enforced disappearances, killings, attacks, lawsuits, and gunfire.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said their sacrifices had opened new horizons for democracy, rights, and hope in national life.
The finance minister is presenting a Tk 938,000 crore budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in the National Parliament. This is the first budget of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the first budget of a BNP-led government in nearly two decades.
