Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has presented the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in Parliament.
The Finance Minister began presenting the budget today, Thursday, at 3:00 PM. During this time, he proposed a 100% tax and duty waiver for several sectors. The government has taken this historic initiative to boost investment and reduce the burden of expenses on ordinary people.
Among the major announcements of tax waivers is the production of edible oil. To ensure food security and reduce import dependence, a proposal has been made to provide a 100% tax holiday for the first 5 years to companies producing edible oil using domestic oilseeds.
Entrepreneurs will receive a 50% tax exemption for the next 3 years and a 25% exemption for the following 2 years. In other words, the budget has created a significant opportunity for a 10-year tax break in the edible oil sector.
To encourage environmentally friendly and affordable electricity generation, a proposal may be made for a zero percent tax rate in the solar power sector until 2035. Additionally, according to sources, a 5% tax rebate on electricity bill payments has been included for consumers using solar power.
Simultaneously, 100% of all duties and taxes, except VAT, are being waived on the import of electric buses used for student transport.
To revolutionize the technology sector and encourage youth, a proposal has been made to completely (100%) withdraw the Tk 300 tax imposed on each mobile SIM card. This will make mobile and internet connections more affordable for the general public.
Furthermore, proposals have been made for a complete exemption of the 15% local VAT on startup companies and the 15% VAT on services provided by content creators and freelancers, as well as the withdrawal of all duties and VAT on the import of laptops, desktops, and printers.
Considering the long-standing demands of kidney patients, the 15% VAT and 5% advance income tax on the import of dialysis filters have been completely waived, which will reduce the cost of each dialysis by approximately Tk 800.
Additionally, a proposal has been made for a 100% exemption on all import duties, regulatory duties, and advance taxes on the import of 21 types of assistive devices for use by persons with special needs.
