Attorney General Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal believes there is no benefit in having a large budget if 20 to 30 percent of it is siphoned off through corruption.
Speaking at a briefing at his office on Thursday afternoon, the Attorney General said, “The expectation from today’s budget is that unnecessary, inadequate, and unjustified expenditures will be eliminated, and every penny of taxpayers’ money will be used properly, free from bribery, corruption, and nepotism. If, for any reason, 20 or 30 percent is siphoned off, then no matter how large the budget is, it will bring no benefit.”
He urged every state department to use allocated funds honestly and responsibly.
Kazal also said that Tk 1.9 million allocated for furniture in his office during the outgoing fiscal year was returned to the state treasury as it was deemed unnecessary.
Criticizing past irregularities, he said, “I do not want the country’s money to be misused in various ways as happened in the past. The people of Bangladesh also do not expect even a single penny of state funds to be embezzled. We want to work from our respective positions to prevent this. At least in my office, I want to ensure that.”
