Owners will have to pay an environment tax if they own more than one motor vehicle for personal use. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will be responsible for collecting this new tax. The tax must be deposited at the time of paying vehicle fitness, registration, or re-registration fees.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced this information while presenting the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament today, Thursday.
According to the proposal, personal motor vehicles primarily refer to private cars, jeeps, and microbuses. The amount of the environment tax will be determined based on the number of vehicles owned by the same owner and the engine capacity (cc) or motor power (kilowatts) of the vehicles.
For each vehicle up to 1500 cc or 75 kilowatts, the environment tax is Tk 25,000; for vehicles over 1500 cc but up to 2000 cc or 100 kilowatts, Tk 50,000; and for vehicles over 2000 cc but up to 2500 cc or 125 kilowatts, Tk 75,000.
For vehicles over 2500 cc but up to 3000 cc or 150 kilowatts, Tk 1,05,000; for vehicles over 3000 cc but up to 3500 cc or 175 kilowatts, Tk 2,00,000; and for vehicles with a capacity exceeding 3500 cc or 175 kilowatts, the environment tax has been set at Tk 3,50,000.
According to the Finance Bill, for owners of multiple private vehicles, the environment tax must be paid for all vehicles except the one on which the lowest rate of environment tax is applicable.
The proposal further states that the environmental surcharge will not be adjustable against any other tax. Additionally, if a taxpayer has multiple vehicles registered in their name with fitness certificates from the BRTA for multiple years, information and proof regarding the environment tax must be submitted along with the income tax return to the concerned Joint Commissioner of Taxes.
The Finance Minister said that this surcharge has been proposed to combat the additional pressure on the environment caused by the increased use of private vehicles and to encourage environmentally friendly transportation systems.
