Bangladesh’s Parliament on Tuesday passed the proposed Tk 938,000 crore national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year by a voice vote during a parliamentary session.
The new budget targets economic growth of 6.5% while aiming to reduce inflation to 7.5%.
The budget is 19% larger than the original budget for the current fiscal year. It projects Tk 243,000 crore deficit, equivalent to 3.6% of gross domestic product (GDP), while the overall budget stands at 13.7% of GDP.
As part of a long-term economic strategy, the finance minister unveiled a three-year roadmap aimed at transforming Bangladesh into a $1 trillion economy. Under the plan, the BNP-led government seeks to rebuild the economy, strengthen stability, and accelerate growth.
The budget sets a revenue collection target of Tk 695,000 crore, including Tk 604,000 crore to be collected by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Before the Appropriation Bill was passed, opposition and independent lawmakers’ proposals to reduce allocations for various ministries and divisions were rejected by voice vote.
On Monday, Parliament approved the Finance Bill with several amendments, including raising the tax-free income threshold and easing Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) requirements.
