Gas supply has resumed from Summit Group’s floating LNG terminal, in Maheshkhali. At 6:10 pm Friday, the terminal began supplying around 110 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) to the national grid.

Confirming the matter, a Summit official said the company had taken an important step to increase gas supply to the national gas grid and help address the country’s ongoing gas crisis. After supply began in the evening, it will be gradually increased, with the terminal expected to reach its maximum capacity of 550 million cubic feet per day by around 2 am on August 15.

The additional gas supply is expected to help increase gas availability for industrial facilities, power generation and other consumers. Authorities believe this will help accelerate economic activity in the country while easing some of the pressure on the national energy system.

Summit said the company is committed to ensuring the maximum possible gas supply within the technical capacity of the terminal and the national transmission system, while maintaining safe and reliable operations. Summit believes an uninterrupted energy supply is essential for the growth of the country’s industrial sector, employment and overall economic development.

However, for the overall national grid to return to normal, Excelerate’s terminal will also need to return to full capacity, which will still take a few days.

Petrobangla officials said that although Summit’s terminal remained operational, gas supply from it was disrupted because an LNG cargo could not be connected to the terminal due to rough seas. As a result, gas supply to the national grid on Thursday fell to less than half of demand. Against daily demand of around 3.8 billion cubic feet, supply was approximately 1.9 billion cubic feet.
