Shonir Akhra in Dhaka remains underwater due to continuous rainfall that began on Saturday night. Although the rain eased slightly on Sunday night, it resumed on Monday morning, creating fresh waterlogging.
As a result, suffering has reached an extreme level in Shonir Akhra, Jatrabari, and surrounding low-lying areas.
With knee-to-waist-deep water accumulated on the roads, commuters, students, and local residents are facing severe hardships. Many vehicles are moving slowly, and in some places, the movement of rickshaws and CNG-powered auto-rickshaws has come to a halt.
People were seen being transported across the water in vans.
Local businessman Md Saiful Islam said, “It has been raining one after another since Saturday night. It decreased a bit last night but started again this morning. I could not even open the shop because of the water.”
Abdus Salam, an employee, added, “I have been suffering since morning to go to the office. There is knee-deep water on the roads in some places, and traffic jams in others. Also, the fares have increased. Daily work is being disrupted.”
Rickshaw puller Karim’s noted, “Due to the accumulated water, it is not possible to take the rickshaw on many roads. There are fewer passengers, and I have to move with risk. We are going as far as possible. Beyond that, people are coming by van.”
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in Dhaka and surrounding areas. The sky may remain cloudy to temporarily overcast.
Winds may blow from the south or southwest at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour, and daytime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.
