Authorities have repatriated 170 Bangladeshi nationals from Benghazi, Libya. A Buraq Air flight carrying them landed in Bangladesh at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
The repatriation operation was carried out with the support of the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration through the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Most of the repatriated Bangladeshis had entered Libya in an attempt to travel illegally to Europe by sea. They reportedly faced abduction and torture at different times while staying there. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged them to share their harrowing experiences with others to help raise public awareness.
Sources said the International Organization for Migration provided each returnee with travel expenses, food assistance, primary medical care, and temporary accommodation when necessary.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said authorities are jointly working to ensure the safe return of Bangladeshi nationals currently held in various detention centers in Libya.
