Freshers' reception and concert held at Brahmanbaria Govt College following 'compromise'

Following a resolution reached over objections raised by the Qawmi Chhatra Oikya Parishad, the freshers' reception, cultural event, and concert for honors students took place at Brahmanbaria Government College.

The event was organized on the college premises on Monday afternoon, followed by a concert featuring the musical band Highway in the afternoon.

Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal, Member of Parliament for Brahmanbaria-3 and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce, attended as the chief guest.

Special guests included Zila Parishad Administrator Sirajul Islam Siraj, Senior Vice-President of District BNP Zahirul Haq Khokon, former mayor Hafizur Rahman Molla Kachi, alongside other district BNP leaders. College faculty and students were also in attendance.

Chaired by the Principal of Brahmanbaria Government College, Professor A. K. M. Obaidul Haq, the program officially welcomed the incoming students. Guests later planted trees on the college's south campus and visited the central library.

The event took place despite initial objections from the Qawmi Chhatra Oikya Parishad, Brahmanbaria, regarding the concert. The organization had submitted a formal request to MP Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal demanding the cancellation of the musical performance.

In their application, the group said that Brahmanbaria is historically a region rich in Islamic tradition, religious knowledge, values, and decorum. They argued that the local social and cultural environment is deeply intertwined with religious sentiments, urging that any campus event remain compatible with local religious values, educational decorum, and public order.

Following discussions, Band Highway's performance proceeded as planned, drawing thousands of students and local youths. The event concluded peacefully.

Sources confirmed that a consensus was reached on Saturday through the mediation of local MP Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal, deciding that the formal reception would take place on the main campus while the cultural performance would be held on the south campus.

The meeting was attended by a 7 to 8-member delegation from the Qawmi Chhatra Oikya Parishad, led by Abdul Khalek, alongside leaders of the college Chhatra Dal led by its president, Shahadat Hossain Bhuiyan.

Speaking after Monday's event, District Chhatra Dal Member Secretary Samir Chakraborty said that Brahmanbaria is the birthplace of musical maestro Ustad Alauddin Khan and serves as a cultural capital where such events have always been held. He noted that while complications had arisen surrounding the concert, the issue was successfully resolved through dialogue, thanking college Chhatra Dal activists for hosting a peaceful event.
