International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will deliver its verdict in a crimes against humanity case involving the killings during the July uprising against former minister Obaidul Quader and six other leaders of Awami League on Tuesday.

The six others accused are Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, and former state minister of information Mohammad A Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.

Following the conclusion of closing arguments on 17 August, the court kept the verdict pending before fixing the date.

All seven accused are fugitives, and proceedings moved forward in their absence after the ICT framed charges in January. State-appointed defense lawyer represented the defendants. Prosecution submitted formal charges on 18 December, and the trial wrapped up testimony on 2 August after 29 state witnesses, including the investigating officer, presented evidence.

The formal indictment charges the accused with issuing order to murder and torture July uprising protesters. Ousted prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has already received a death sentence for crimes against humanity.

The court handed down the sentence in Hasina’s absence after she fled to India on 5 August 2024, where she continues to reside.
