Clash during Argentina-Egypt match watching, Brazil fan killed

A clash sparked through an argument during the Argentina-Egypt football match did leave a young man dead in the Sadar Upazila of Cumilla. The incident took place around 11:00 PM on Tuesday in the Dhanpur area of North Durgapur Union, adjacent to the Kotbari Highway.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam, 32. He was the son of Mohammad Motiur Rahman, hailing from the North Cheranga area of Jaldhaka Upazila in Nilphamari district.
Shankar Kanti Das, the officer-in-charge of the Cantonment Police Outpost, said during the Argentina-Egypt football match at night, Brazil supporter Shariful Islam began celebrating when Argentina conceded the first goal. When he made taunting remarks directed at Argentina fans, a verbal altercation broke out between the two groups. At one stage, several Argentina supporters attacked and severely beat him. Local residents rescued Shariful who got critically injured and rushed him to the hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
Towhidul Anwar, the officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed that a clash erupted following an argument over the football match, resulting in the death of a young man. The body has been recovered and sent to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The officer-in-charge added that no written complaint has been received from the victim's family regarding the incident yet. Legal action will be taken once a complaint is filed. Meanwhile, the police are actively working to identify those involved in the incident.
