Shamim Osman, the former MP of the Awami League (AL) - a party that fell on 5 August 2024, in the face of July mass uprising and was then banned from activities - has been seen in the United States.
Earlier, he was spotted in India and at a shopping mall in Ajman, Dubai.
Expatriate photojournalist Neher Siddiquee posted a photo of Shamim on his Facebook account on 5 July. In that photo, he is seen standing on a riverbank in New York, smoking in a very pensive mood.
Then in another post shared on social media, Shamim is seen with multiple local leaders and activists, including Siddiqur Rahman, the president of the US branch of AL.
The circulation of the photo has sparked discussions among both expatriates and Bangladeshis. During the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement, Shamim and his associates opened fire on students in Narayanganj.
A video of Shamim Osman and his forces firing shots on Bangabandhu Road in Chashara on 19 July spread on Facebook.
Shamim’s brother-in-law and former director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Tanvir Ahmed Titu was also seen firing shots. After 5 August, Shamim fled the country with his entire family.
On 13 May, charges were filed against 12 defendants, including Shamim and his son Ayon Osman, in a case involving crimes against humanity committed in Narayanganj during the July uprising.
