Irene Khan Named Bangladesh’s UN Ambassador

International human rights and law expert Irene Khan is set to be appointed as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam confirmed the matter in a Demi-Official (DO). Prime Minister Tarique Rahman approved her appointment.
Irene is receiving a two-year contractual appointment with the rank and salary of a senior secretary. She serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on the freedom of opinion and expression.
Studied at the University of Manchester and Harvard Law School, she made history as the first woman, Asian, and Muslim secretary general of Amnesty International from 2001 to 2009.
She also led the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) from 2012 to 2019 and received the 2006 Sydney Peace Prize.
Foreign Ministry said her expertise will strengthen Bangladesh’s position in multilateral forums.
It added that she will play an important role in effectively highlighting Bangladesh’s position on various global issues and making the country’s diplomatic activities more dynamic.
Ministry of Public Administration’s cooperation has been requested to finalize the appointment.
