A patient named Amirunnesa died inside an ambulance after it became stuck in a severe traffic jam in Daudkandi of Cumilla on the Dhaka Chattogram Highway.

She died at around 3:30 am Friday after being stuck in traffic for nearly four hours while being taken to Dhaka after suffering a heart attack.

Amirunnesa was a resident of Pranbhagabatipur village in Chandraganj upazila of Lakshmipur.

Her son Tarek Al Hasan said they left for Dhaka by ambulance around 8 pm Friday after Amirunnesa suffered a heart attack. The ambulance reached Daudkandi around 11 pm and became stuck in severe traffic congestion. As the vehicle remained almost stationary for four hours, she eventually died inside the ambulance at around 3:30 am.

Meanwhile, severe traffic congestion has developed across a nearly 40 kilometer stretch from Ashariarchar in Sonargaon of Narayanganj to Kutumbpur in Chandina upazila of Cumilla. The congestion began after road repair work started in the Dhaka bound lane at Ashariarchar at 8 a.m. Friday.

Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer in Charge Prem Das Roy said, “I heard from media workers about the report of a person dying on the highway. The traffic congestion has now eased. Vehicles are moving on all lanes of the highway.”

Mohammad Shamim, inspector and in charge of the Bhaberchar Highway Police Outpost, said, “The traffic congestion occurred because road repair work began in the Dhaka bound lane at Ashariarchar. Highway police are performing their duties to reduce the suffering of passengers and drivers.”
