A rent dispute turned deadly in Azimpur, Dhaka, leaving a man dead after a brutal physical assault.
The incident occurred around 4 am on Monday at the field in front of the Azimpur Government Medical Staff Quarter.
The deceased has been identified as Md Swapan, 62, a businessman who supplied cosmetic items to various shops.
Police detained two individuals, the landlord, Rizvi and his cousin Rohan, in connection with the incident, and the process of filing a case is underway.
According to sources, Swapan was rescued in an injured state and brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the duty doctor declared him dead.
DMCH Police Outpost Inspector Md Faruk said the body is kept in the hospital morgue and the police station has been informed of the matter.
The victim’s elder brother, Md Selim, added that the two brothers lived in a ground-floor room for a monthly rent of Tk 6,000. Out of last month’s rent, only Tk 1,000 remained outstanding.
He noted that he had called Rizvi several times on Sunday to pay the balance, but Rizvi did not answer. Later, around 3:15 am, Rizvi called him and arrived at the residence, banging loudly on the door.
Selim said, “After opening the door, Rizvi cursed me using foul language. At one point, I said, I will not give you the money now. I will pay after giving a complaint to the committee. Then Rizvi threatened to deal with us. He kicked me and threw me down.”
He explained that when Swapan protested the attack, Rizvi and his cousin Rohan dragged Swapan to the field. There, they beat him which ultimately resulted in his death.
