DMP arrests Bappi, 4 associates

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Tanim Reza alias Bappi and his four associates in connection with extortion and a shooting in Motijheel, Dhaka.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Estate, Development & ICT) Mohammad Osman Gani confirmed the matter in a press conference held at the DMP Media Center on Saturday.
The other arrested individuals are Mohammad Jewel, 48, Shakil, 27, Md Manik Kazi, 50, and Rakibul Islam Bhuiyan alias Rizon, 35.
Police reported that the group fired shots at the office of a businessman who had leased a sacrificial animal market in South Kamalapur. They also demanded Tk 10 lakh in extortion via a foreign phone number and making death threats.
A case was filed at Motijheel Police Station. Although investigations confirmed the involvement of Bappi and his associates, they could not be arrested earlier as they had been in hiding for a long time.
Gani said police dconducted a raid on Friday morning near the Hotel Purbani area, arresting Bappi and three of his accomplices. Based on the information obtained from them, another individual was later arrested during a raid in Kamalapur.
Following the interrogation, police conducted a raid at Bappi’s office in South Kamalapur. From there, police recovered one foreign revolver, two foreign pistols, five rounds of revolver ammunition, two rounds of pistol ammunition, two magazines, one electric shock gun, and one Chinese axe.
A separate case under the Arms Act has been filed at Motijheel Police Station regarding this recovery.
Bappi faces multiple allegations of extortion from various establishments in the Motijheel area. Moreover, he has a total of seven cases filed against him at different DMP police stations on various charges, including extortion, robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder, women and children repression, and narcotics.
The police official confirmed that the legal process against the accused is ongoing.
