Dhaka Court Hands Life Term to Husband in Dowry Murder

A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife after failing to receive a dowry.
Public Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam George confirmed the information.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict on Thursday. The man is named Md Jahangir Alam.
The court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of simple imprisonment. Following the verdict, the convict was sent to jail.
According to the case details, the victim, Shahanur Akter, married Jahangir following the death of her first husband. They lived in a rented house in Keraniganj.
Jahangir worked as a day laborer and also collected waste from various houses. He was a drug addict and frequently demanded dowry from his wife, which led to recurring family disputes.
On 19 November 2018, a quarrel broke out between the couple over dowry money.
The following morning, family members discovered Shahanur’s throat-slit body. Jahangir was not found at the house. Upon being informed, police arrived at the scene and recovered the body.
Shahanur’s brother, Jamal Uddin, filed a case at Keraniganj Model Police Station on 20 November. SI Md Rafiqul Islam investigated the case and submitted a chargesheet against Jahangir to the court on 14 June 2019.
Then the trial commenced through the framing of charges against Jahangir. During the trial, the tribunal recorded the testimonies of six witnesses.
