Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said depositors of five banks will receive their money back along with interest. However, this would require some patience.
He made these remarks on Wednesday in National Parliament while responding to MP Rehana Akter Ranu.
During the session, Rehana said, “About 75 lakh depositors have around Tk 1 lakh 42 thousand crore deposited in five banks.”
She added that while eight months have passed since the start of operations for Sammilito Islami Bank - formed by merging five distressed Shariah-based banks - the uncertainty regarding the return of customer deposits has not been resolved.
Although limited withdrawal opportunities have been provided, no specific schedule has yet been announced for when the massive number of deposits can be fully returned.
In response, Khosru said, “I have already stated in Parliament that the depositors will have their deposits returned with interest. However, they need to be a little patient. Because these banks are incurring losses, and those losses are increasing every day.”
