The Bangladesh Village Police Service Association held a human chain program in Dhaka, demanding that Village Police jobs be brought under the national pay scale and seeking a meeting with the Prime Minister.
During the program, organized by the association in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday morning, participants expressed their commitment to supporting various activities of the current government and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister.
Commander MM Lal Mia, president of the central committee of the Bangladesh Village Police Service Association, presided over the human chain. Among those present were Ananda Mohol Poridan, chairman of the International Human Rights Commission; Director General Moinur Rashid Chowdhury; Joint Director General Md. Masud Khan Akash; the association’s General Secretary Parul Akter; and leaders from the central, district, and upazila levels.
President MM Lal Mia said, “Under the Local Government Division, about 45,810 Village Police members are serving in 4,578 Union Parishads across 495 upazilas of the country. Although they wear government-designated uniforms and carry out various official duties day and night, they currently receive only Tk 7,500 as an allowance or salary. It is impossible to meet even the minimum needs of a family under current market conditions with that amount.”
He added, “The rising cost of living has made it difficult to bear the educational expenses of children. In many cases, financial hardship is forcing families to withdraw their children from schools and colleges and send them to work. At the same time, supporting elderly family members has also become increasingly difficult.”
He alleged that Village Police members continue to be deprived of a fair pay structure despite the existence of a government gazette regarding their recruitment and court rulings in their favor. He said that although they have long been demanding inclusion in the national pay scale, no effective initiative has been taken.
The program put forward two demands; bringing Village Police members under the national pay scale in the FY2026–27 budget and ensuring an opportunity for Village Police representatives to meet with the Prime Minister regarding their demands. The association’s leaders also said they would continue their protest programs until their demands are met.
