National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched the online income tax return (e-Return) filing service on Wednesday for individual taxpayers for the 2026-2027 tax year. NBR has made online return filing mandatory for the majority of individual taxpayers.
According to an NBR press release, the authority has expanded the e-Return system to make tax services simpler, faster, and more transparent. Since its introduction in 2021, the system has gained significant popularity, with a record of around 4.7 million individual taxpayers filing their returns online during the last 2025-2026 tax year.
This system allows taxpayers to prepare and submit returns, pay taxes, and instantly collect income tax certificates from their homes.
Under the new regulations, e-Return is compulsory for all general individual taxpayers. However, the following groups may still file paper returns if they choose:
- Senior citizens aged 65 or older.
- Physically disabled individuals or those with special needs (with necessary certification).
- Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad.
- Representatives of deceased taxpayers.
- Foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
Moreover, if any taxpayer cannot file an e-Return due to technical or registration-related complications, they may submit a paper return after obtaining approval from the Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes.
NBR added that taxpayers can pay their taxes online through the e-Tax platform using bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and mobile financial services (MFS) such as bKash, Rocket, and Nagad.
Taxpayers will receive acknowledgment receipts and income tax certificates immediately upon submitting their returns.
To encourage taxpayers, NBR introduced a new incentive for this tax year. Individuals who file their returns between July and September will receive a 5 percent rebate on their net payable tax, with a maximum limit of Tk 25,000.
This facility will expire after September. Taxpayers who file after December will be required to pay additional taxes.
For any complications regarding the e-Return process, NBR call center (09643717171) and other online platforms will provide assistance during government working days.
As part of its efforts to increase revenue collection, enhance voluntary compliance, and digitally transform tax administration, NBR has urged all taxpayers to file their online returns in a timely manner.
