MP’s marriage date questioned as kazi reveals late signatures

The controversy over Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second marriage continues to escalate as new information has surfaced regarding the date and signatures on his marriage certificate (Kabinnama).

Following a viral video, Nazrul claimed that he married Mariam Khatun on 17 June in Moghbazar, Dhaka, with the consent of his first wife, Maksuda Islam.

Then his first wife, second wife, and father-in-law released separate video messages supporting the marriage.

However, Maulana BM Bakibillah, the kazi (marriage registrar) of Gabura Union, claimed that while the date of 17 June was used on the certificate, the signatures of the MP and other involved parties were only taken on Tuesday - after the video had already gone viral.

Bakibillah said he was first contacted via phone on Monday night regarding the marriage and was instructed to prepare the certificate using the 17 June date. He had no prior knowledge of the wedding’s time or location and prepared the document solely based on the information provided over the phone.

Inconsistencies have also emerged regarding the bride’s name, date of birth, and other details in the certificate. Bakibillah added that these details were also provided to him over the phone.

While Nazrul maintained that his second marriage was solemnized on 17 June, the kazi’s statement has raised fresh questions regarding the authenticity of the marriage certificate and the entire legal process.
