Why Haaland Changed His Name on His Jersey

Norway star striker Erling Haaland marked his World Cup campaign with a strong start, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Iraq. But beyond his goals, fans noticed another detail during the match — a change on the back of his jersey.
The Manchester City forward, traditionally known worldwide simply as Haaland,” now features both family names on his Norway national team shirt, reading 'Braut Haaland' above his number nine.
The addition of his mother’s surname drew attention during his World Cup debut against Iraq. While not common, it is not unusual for athletes to include both parents’ surnames on their kits as a form of personal tribute.
Haaland, who often uses his full name on social media, has long been associated with his father’s surname, Alf-Inge Haaland, a former professional footballer. The 'Braut' name comes from his mother, Gry Marita Braut, a former Norwegian heptathlete.
The change is seen as a gesture of recognition and respect toward his mother’s side of the family.
