England reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after coming from behind to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time in Miami, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice to seal victory.
The midfielder once again proved to be England’s hero, five days after his two-goal performance against Mexico. Bellingham canceled out Andreas Schjelderup’s opener with a fine finish in first-half stoppage time before netting the winner from close range in extra time.
The goals took the 23-year-old’s tally to six in the tournament, level with Harry Kane and just one behind Norway’s Erling Haaland.
England will now face either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals, marking the country’s fourth appearance in the last four of a World Cup.
Norway had taken the lead when Schjelderup’s cross-shot beat goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The Norwegians protested England’s equalizer, claiming that Orjan Nyland’s goal kick had struck an overhead camera cable before the ball fell to Elliot Anderson in the build-up to Bellingham’s goal. FIFA, however, said the ball’s sensor showed no contact with the cable.
Norway had chances to extend their advantage, with Alexander Sorloth notably failing to square the ball to Haaland during a two-on-one counterattack.
Their missed opportunities proved costly. With penalties looming, substitute Morgan Rogers’ long-range effort was spilled by Nyland and Bellingham reacted quickest to force the ball into the net and send England into the semi-finals.
Thomas Tuchel’s side have now won back-to-back knockout matches after extra time and remain in contention for the World Cup title.
