Tensions have escalated between Iran and FIFA over the use of flags at the World Cup, as a new controversy emerges ahead of the tournament’s kickoff.
An organization has called on FIFA to reverse its decision banning Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag, warning that legal action could follow if the governing body does not comply.
The non-profit group Institute for Voices of Liberty said in an Instagram statement last week that it had sent an official notice to FIFA. The organization demanded the immediate removal of all restrictions on the peaceful display of the ‘Lion and Sun’ flag at World Cup venues in the United States.
It further warned that it is prepared to pursue all necessary legal steps to protect freedom of expression if its demands are not met.
Meanwhile, the president of the Iranian Football Federation has also urged FIFA to ban the flag.
According to a report by The Athletic, FIFA has prohibited spectators from bringing any flags or clothing featuring Iran’s pre-revolutionary symbols into stadiums during the tournament.
FIFA stated that the symbol violates its code of conduct. Its regulations prohibit banners, flags, clothing, or similar items that are ‘political, offensive, or discriminatory’ in nature.
The flag, which features a lion holding a sword and a sun, was used in Iran before the 1980 Islamic Revolution.
Emel Karsaz, an Iranian citizen based in Los Angeles, said it is important for opponents of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to have the opportunity to display the symbol.
He also warned that FIFA’s restriction could trigger large-scale protests at World Cup venues next month. “This decision will anger people so much that I am certain there will be major demonstrations,” Karsaz said.
The FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran will play its first two group-stage matches at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles before travelling to Seattle’s Lumen Field for its third match.
