Smuggled goods worth Tk 3.48 billion seized along border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods and narcotics worth Tk 3.4781 billion in raids across various border areas of the country in August. The information was disclosed in a press release sent by the BGB headquarters on Wednesday, 9 September.
BGB Public Relations Officer Md. Shariful Islam said 220 smugglers were arrested in August on allegations of involvement in drug trafficking and smuggling. During the same period, 37 Bangladeshis, six Indians and 188 Myanmar nationals were detained for illegally crossing the border and legal action was taken against them.
According to the BGB report, 4,593,863 yaba tablets were seized during BGB operations last month. In addition, 4 kilograms of crystal meth or ice, 1,371 bottles of Phensedyl, 7,636 bottles of foreign liquor, 345 liters of Bangla liquor and 1,756 cans of beer were recovered.
Besides, 1,863 kilograms and 680 grams of cannabis, 228,039 narcotic tablets and injections, 22,006 bottles of various types of syrups and a large quantity of other tablets, bidis and cigarettes were seized.
The smuggling list also included various other goods. A total of 8 kilograms and 554 grams of gold, 21,646 sarees, nearly 4,000 three-piece sets, shirt pieces, bed sheets and blankets and more than 5,000 readymade garments were seized.
The seizures also included more than 600,000 cosmetic items, more than 1 million pieces of fireworks, nearly 8,000 mobile phone displays, more than 34,000 mobile phone parts and large quantities of chocolates, tea leaves, betel nuts, cumin, garlic, sugar, fertilizer, seeds and other products.
Alongside smuggling, BGB operations also uncovered attempts to traffic weapons through the border. In August, 14 locally made and foreign pistols, 10 magazines and 74 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
In addition, 14 trucks and covered vans, 10 pickup trucks, six private cars, 91 motorcycles and various other vehicles were seized along with 97 watercrafts.
