As Cape Verde prepares for one of the biggest matches in its football history, the excitement has reached the country’s highest office.
President José Maria Neves believes his team is capable of pulling off a major upset against defending world champion Argentina. Ahead of the Round of 32 clash in Miami on July 4, the African leader confidently predicted the outcome.
“We will win 1-0,” Neves said.
Cape Verde enters the knockout stage after an impressive group-stage campaign, advancing from a group that included Uruguay, Spain, and Saudi Arabia. Now, the team coached by Bubista is aiming to make history against Argentina.
The match will also feature a special tribute before kickoff. Cape Verde will present Lionel Messi with the national team's jersey bearing the Argentine captain's name and his iconic No. 10.
Neves has previously spoken of his admiration for Messi.
“Messi is an extraordinary player. He is deeply respected in Cape Verde. For Cape Verdeans, he is the best footballer in the world. He represents excellence and perfection in football. Playing against him is an honor and a source of pride. Simply facing him is a great achievement for our national team,” the president said.
Despite that admiration, Neves said his team's competitive spirit remains unchanged.
With a population of fewer than 600,000, Cape Verde believes it can produce one of the biggest upsets in its football history by defeating the reigning world champions and writing a new chapter for the nation.
