Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 by defeating Algeria 2-0 at BC Place Vancouver.
Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye ensured Murat Yakin’s side advanced with minimal difficulty, marking the country’s fourth consecutive knockout stage appearance.
The Swiss took control in the 10th minute. Johan Manzambi embarked on a determined run into the penalty area, delivering a cutback for Embolo to tuck home from the six-yard box.
Algeria’s coach, Vladimir Petkovic - who previously managed Switzerland from 2014-2021 - hoped to inspire a turnaround after trailing by only one at halftime.
However, Switzerland struck again just one minute after the restart. Ndoye controlled a half-clearance from Rafik Belghali and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
With only one defeat in their last 17 games, Switzerland kept Algeria at arm’s length throughout the second half. Algeria failed to fashion any clear chances to challenge the Swiss lead.
Switzerland remains in Vancouver for their next match on 7 July, where they will face the winner of the Colombia versus Ghana fixture.
