Pregnancy leg swelling: When to worry, what to do

Many women experience swollen legs during pregnancy due to excess fluid accumulating in the body’s cells, particularly in the ankles and feet. To manage this condition, experts advise against sitting or standing with legs lowered for extended periods.
One should never consume medication to dry out body or leg fluid without a doctor’s recommendation. It is recommended to sleep with a pillow placed under the legs to keep them slightly elevated.
Wearing comfortable shoes without heels is essential. Long-distance travel while sitting or standing with hanging legs should be avoided.
It is vital to regularly monitor both blood pressure and blood sugar levels. If blood pressure consistently remains at 130/90 or 140/90, a doctor’s consultation is necessary. For those whose work involves prolonged sitting, placing a small stool or footrest under the feet can provide relief.
Do not ignore itching, cracked skin, or sores resulting from excess fluid accumulation and should regularly drink two to two and a half liters of water.
The medication for high blood pressure used before pregnancy is not the same as that used during pregnancy. Since swelling can also occur due to hormonal changes or hypertension, seeking medical advice is crucial.
One must go to the hospital immediately if they experience excessive leg swelling, blurred vision, extreme high blood pressure, drowsiness, dizziness, or bleeding.
