Despite criticism from opposition parties over the law and order situation, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed dismissed the concerns, saying there has been visible improvement in the situation over the past six months. According to the Home Minister, the people of the country will assess whether they are satisfied with the law and order situation. The government can say that there has been visible improvement over the past six months.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting of the committee formed to make recommendations regarding the report of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Pay Commission, 2025, at the Ministry of Finance in the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

The Home Minister said, “It has been only six months since we took office. During this period, we have carried out many reform initiatives. You have seen various commendable initiatives by the law enforcement agencies. The various initiatives taken and implemented by the government in 180 days, along with public welfare programs, have been praised by the people.”

Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad alleged, “The scale of failures is heavier than the scale of the government’s successes. This administration has failed to achieve success in any major area of the people’s expectations and aspirations. From the very beginning, it has engaged in a form of deception with the people over the July Charter. At the same time, deterioration in the law and order situation, fuel and power shortages, politicization of the banking sector and various other incidents have created concern among the public. Overall, the current government is also following the old political path.”

However, the Home Minister said the BNP government has efficiently dealt with a series of global and domestic crises since taking office.

Referring to the global fuel and gas crisis caused by the Russia Ukraine war, he said, “Although the shock of the crisis was felt worldwide, the government did not immediately increase fuel prices in the country. Prices were not increased for nearly a month during the Boro season to protect the interests of farmers. Later, a decision was taken to adjust prices to a tolerable level.”

Noting that the longstanding gas and fuel crisis cannot be resolved overnight, the Home Minister said, “The current government is working to overcome the crisis through sustainable and long term plans. After inspecting the Matarbari deep sea port, a decision has been taken to establish a full fledged land based LNG terminal there. In addition, as mechanical problems frequently occur at the floating terminals of Summit and Excelerate Energy, initiatives have been taken to establish multiple floating gas terminals to resolve the problem, and surveys are currently underway to select locations.”
