The main objective of the Meghna Water Treatment Plant project is to reduce dependence on groundwater by treating water from the Meghna River and supplying it to the Dhaka metropolis, said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Minister for Rural Development and Cooperatives.
He made these remarks today (Monday) morning while inspecting the Meghna Water Treatment Plant project located in the Gandharbpur area of Rupganj Upazila, Narayanganj.
The minister said that this mega project to bring water from the Meghna River, treat it, and ensure safe water supply for citizens of the two city corporations of Dhaka metropolis has been undertaken. In the past, due to excessive reliance on groundwater, the water level in Dhaka was dangerously declining, which could have created a major crisis in the future.
According to him, to address this crisis, the initiative has been taken to use surface water from the Meghna River, treat it, and supply it to the Dhaka metropolis. Through this project, it will be possible to supply approximately 500 million liters of water per day.
Mirza Fakhrul said the project includes the construction of a water intake center in the river, a raw water transmission line, a water treatment plant with a capacity of 500 million liters per day, and a transmission network for supplying treated water. The cost of implementing the project has been estimated at Tk 10,000 crore.
He said that after the completion of the current project, there is a plan to undertake another similar project. If both projects are implemented, it will be possible to supply approximately 1000 million liters of water daily to the Dhaka metropolis.
Emphasizing reducing groundwater use and increasing surface water use in the future, the minister called upon concerned parties to take necessary preparations.
After the inspection, he gave necessary directives to the relevant officials of Dhaka WASA to expedite the remaining work of the project.
