2 govt officials accused of obtaining elderly allowance

Two government officials face allegations for securing an elderly allowance card for their mother by concealing information in Abhaynagar, Jashore
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Salahuddin Dipu confirmed the matter.
According to Union Parishad sources, the elderly allowance for Monowara Begum became effective on 1 July 2025.
Locals claimed that Monowara’s eldest son, Md Abu Taher Sardar, is the deputy director at the Meherpur Contract Growers Office of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). Her other son, SM Mafiz, serves as a sub-assistant agriculture officer in Narail Sadar Upazila.
Locals questioned how the elderly allowance card was approved for their mother despite both sons holding government positions, and they have demanded legal action against those responsible.
Mafiz said they applied for the allowance for his mother following his father’s death. When asked why the card was obtained while two sons are in government service, he added that it was done, but the card would be returned to the department soon.
UNO Dipu told Agamir Somoy that widow and elderly allowances are allocated for the underprivileged, the extreme poor, and the helpless people of society.
Regarding the allegations, he remarked, “Allegations have been received those two government officials listed their mother’s name by concealing actual information, which is extremely unfortunate. After learning of the matter, a letter has been sent to the higher authorities to take necessary action.”
