Speaker to assume duties if president steps down

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said he heard nothing regarding the President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s resignation while in Thailand and if Shahabuddin resigns, he would temporarily assume the responsibilities as per the constitution.
He made these remarks upon arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 12:15 pm on Friday. Hafiz traveled to Bangkok for medical treatment.
Although he was originally scheduled to return home on Sunday, sources said he was asked to return on Friday following a special government emergency message.
