Michael Jackson biopic continues its historic run, officially becoming the highest-grossing film in the history of Lionsgate. Before the film even hits screens in Japan next weekend, global box office figures show the movie has reached a staggering $897.9 million worldwide.
During its seventh weekend, the Antoine Fuqua-directed and Graham King-produced film earned $23.1 million globally. This total includes revenue from Universal and territories managed by Volga, such as Russia, where the film has collected nearly $10 million.
The film’s domestic total now stands at $354.2 million. Internationally, it earned $15.4 million this past weekend across 83 territories, bringing its overall foreign total to $543.685 million. With these numbers, “Michael” has officially surpassed the foreign performance of Bohemian Rhapsody in comparable markets.
Industry experts note that the film will overtake the two previous top-grossing Lionsgate titles: 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($865 million) and 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 ($868.5 million).
