Many journalists were killed while performing their duties during the previous government’s tenure, and journalists were subjected to harassment at every level, said LGRD Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He called on journalists to remain united to protect their rights and ensure media freedom.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a views-exchange meeting with journalists at Mirza Ruhul Amin Auditorium, organized by Thakurgaon Press Club on Friday afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul said many journalists do not receive fair wages according to the wage board because of a lack of unity among them.
Urging journalists to unite, he said that a new opportunity has emerged in the country after the July uprising, and this opportunity should be used to work for the nation and its people.
He further said that responsible and objective journalism can play a vital role in the welfare of the country and the nation. Journalism is a highly difficult and challenging profession, he added, noting that the mystery behind the Sagar-Runi murder case has still not been solved.
He said journalism should never be underestimated, as journalists play a significant role in shaping society and the state. However, irresponsible journalism can be harmful to the nation.
Addressing journalists, he urged them to always seek the views of the accused or opposing parties before publishing any news. He also said that objective journalism requires extensive reading and research.
The meeting was attended by Thakurgaon Press Club Acting President Lutfar Rahman Mithu, senior journalist Abdul Latif, and journalists from various print, electronic, and online media outlets in the district.
