Lionel Messi visited Kolkata, India, late last year. This time, Neymar could also be seen in Kolkata. Reports suggest Brazil may visit Kolkata later this year to play an international friendly.
ESPN Brazil reported that the Brazilian Football Confederation is in talks with Indian organizers to arrange the friendly match.
The preliminary discussions between Indian representatives and the Brazilian Football Confederation began during this year’s World Cup. Brazilian officials were particularly impressed by the overwhelming enthusiasm of Indian fans during the tournament. The excitement shown by Indian football supporters for the Seleção on social media also caught their attention.
Brazil are scheduled to play three international friendlies between September and October. Two of those matches in Australia have already been confirmed.
Brazil will face Australia on September 25 in Townsville and on September 29 in Brisbane. India is now being considered as the possible venue for the third match.
The opponent for the proposed match has not yet been finalized. Although Bangladesh, Singapore, and Qatar were also under consideration to host the match, discussions are currently progressing only with India.
Earlier, in 1977, Brazil’s three time World Cup winning legend Pelé played for the New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan at Eden Gardens. If fit, Neymar, Vinícius and others could travel to India with the Brazil squad.
